Bruce Springsteen Postpones Philadelphia Concerts Due to Illness

Springsteen and E Street Band have postponed the latest dates on their 2023 Tour.

Hours before the first of two concerts at Citizens Bank Park, Bruce Springsteen announced that his Philadelphia tour dates would be postponed due to illness. The announcement was made on Springsteen’s social media accounts at 2 p.m., stating that both Wednesday’s and Friday’s shows would be rescheduled. Ticket holders were advised to keep their tickets, which would remain valid for the new dates.

These concerts were set to be Springsteen’s first stadium shows in South Philadelphia since 2016 and were eagerly anticipated by fans. The shows with the E Street Band were planned as a return to the city just five months after his sold-out show at the Wells Fargo Center in March. However, that earlier show had faced postponements due to undisclosed illness, and Springsteen had also tested positive for COVID-19 after the initial U.S. leg of the tour.

Risa Altman, a devoted Springsteen fan since 1975, expressed her disappointment at the postponement. She and her sister had been looking forward to attending the concert together. Altman emphasized that the experience of live music, especially by the E Street Band, can’t be replicated by recordings.

Marta Storm, who had driven down from the Poconos with her daughter Emily, was hoping to fulfill a bucket list item of watching Springsteen with her mother. Emily, a nurse, was attending her first Springsteen show. Despite the postponement, they remained hopeful of attending a future concert together.

Justin McAndrew, who had a tradition of attending Springsteen concerts with his father since he was young, was also disappointed by the postponement. He expressed well wishes for Springsteen and the band’s recovery.

Details about Springsteen’s whereabouts when he fell ill were not disclosed. The American leg of his tour had started with European shows that received great reviews. The next scheduled performances on the tour were set to take place at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts on August 24 and 26.

The postponement of Springsteen’s shows follows the cancellation of the Made in America festival, an annual hip-hop event organized by Jay-Z. The event, which typically draws large crowds, was called off this year and was supposed to feature headliners like Lizzo and SZA.
